Additional support for pupils with particular needs

How will you work with me to help my child who needs additional support from adults at home to access remote education?

We recognise that some pupils, for example some pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), may not be able to access remote education without support from adults at home. We acknowledge the difficulties this may place on families, and we will work with parents and carers to support those pupils in the following ways:

  • For pupils with SEND, communication with families will be critical. School will be in touch with parents and carers where their child’s needs might necessitate particular provision. This might mean tailoring resources to the child in question so that they aren’t necessarily required to try to access work that is in line with their year group objectives, providing devices to be used at home to support learning, or in some cases working together with parents to create an individualised plan for education provision during the lockdown.
  • Families where children have an EHCP will be contacted and we will ensure they are aware that there is a place in school available for them, regardless of parents’ key worker status.
  • Where relevant, school staff will liaise with outside services, for example SALT, educational psychologists or the emotional wellbeing and behavioural support team, in order to work together to support families as effectively as possible.
  • If appropriate, where children are working on specific targets in school (for example relating to speech therapy), the paper pack provided for them will be tailored to include specific resources enabling parents to work on these targets with their child.
  • As always, if you have any concerns about your child and feel that they would benefit from extra support in some form relating to individual needs that they may have, please get in touch with our SENDCo, Mrs Morris, by emailing julia.morris@ellington.northumberland.sch.uk .

How will you help my child who is too young to access remote education materials independently?

Children in Nursery, Reception and Year 1 will find it harder to complete activities independently during remote learning. However, live lessons for children will support children in Reception and Year 1 particularly well. Children in Nursery will be given activities to complete with adult support.

Staff in each year group are constantly monitoring the year group email accounts and ClassDojo and are keen to respond to any concerns and support parents to the best of their ability. We will listen to parent feedback carefully, and adjust and develop our weekly plans so that work given is not unrealistic to complete.

In addition to communication via email, parents of nursery and reception children can also communicate and share their children’s learning via the 360 EYFS observation app.

In individual cases, where issues are raised, staff and parents will work collaboratively to come up with a solution where families feel comfortable with the level of work they are expected to produce.
